Day 1 - Pick up your car in Copenhagen and head north
Pick up the rental car either from Copenhagen airport or Copenhagen city. You have a 3,5 hour drive ahead and it will take you to the Aarhus area. Spend the day here visiting the Aarhus Museum of Art, the Old Town, which is an open air museum, and Moesgaard Museum. The night will be spent in the area.
Days 2 - 3 - Hirtshals and Fredrikshavn - Vikings, Skagen and beach walks
The nice country roads will take you towards Fredrikshavn and Hirtshals area, take your time and stop in the urban city Aalborg also known as “The city of dreams”. Learn a bit more about the Vikings at Lindholm Høje Museum before getting to the end location for the day.
In this area you will be spending two nights, a drive up to Skagen is definitely to recommended. This is Denmark's northernmost point where the two seas - the Skagerrak and Kattegat - meet. Think windswept sand dunes, art galleries and white cottages. A visit to the North Sea Ocenarium in Hirshals is a must. But a relaxing coffee break in a cosy café in Fredrikshavn should also be on the list.
Day 4 - Beach life in Ringkøbing
A drive down to Ringkøbing is on the agenda. Choose the road gazing out over the coastline or get back on the country roads again. First stop is the fabulous beach in Kitmøller (Cold Hawaii) or stop for a walk in Thy National Park before getting down to the Ringkøbing area where you will spend the night. In this area beach life is a fun thing for both adults and kids. Ringkøbing Fjord is the largest lake in West Jutland. The fjord is a shallow lake of brackish water surrounded by tidal meadows. Keep your eyes open. You might find some amber on the beaches.
You may like to visit Denmark's collection of vintage aircraft at the Fly Museum on the outskirts of Ringkøbing.
Day 5 - University City of Odense - Home to Europe's best zoo
Drive back through the inland of Denmark to the University city of Odense, also full of manor houses and castles to visit. Big green parks are nearby for a relaxing moment or to explore more about Odense culture. A visit to Odense Zoo might be exciting for everyone and perhaps you may even like to overnight at the Zoo.
Day 6 - Depart Denmark
Time to leave Denmark behind. A visit to Tivoli in Copenhagen might be fun before starting a new adventure in one of the other Scandinavian countries.

Our Nordic Farm and Self-Drive Holidays program extends across the Nordic region, including Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland. We have teamed up with Scandinavian countryside farms offering accommodation on site. Our Farm Holidays are perfect for families with young children, or others interested in getting an insight into Nordic countryside life.
We have spent time selecting countryside accommodation situated in key locations allowing you the opportunity to explore attractions and scenic highlights in the regions on day tours. Then come back to the farm lodging in the afternoon enjoying a good traditional home cooked meal.
Our Nordic self-drive holidays are designed as short itineraries in each of the countries Norway, Finland, Denmark, Sweden & Iceland and can be combined to create a longer more in-depth itinerary if you wish.
We recognise that most people will not necessarily want to spend each and every night at a farm B&B. Therefore, on longer itineraries, we will mix your accommodation up offering you a combination of a farm stay, country lodges, boutique hotels and kros/inns. Each of the properties we offer is unique, and lodging can range from a working farm to a comfortable country lodge/hotel.
You can leave the choice of accommodation to us giving you a great mixture, or you can be specific about your preferred accommodation when you book. Our accommodation categories are:
- Manor House/Historic Hotel/Castle - historic countryside manors, hotels and castles turned into stately accommodation (Norway, Sweden, Denmark & Finland)
- Country Lodge/Hotel - lodge found in national parks, countryside and mountains (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland & Iceland)
- Kro/Inn - countryside B&B/restaurant (mainly Sweden & Denmark)
- Farm/Gård - working farms, some with farm animals (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland & Iceland)
- Lighthouse - traditional lighthouses on the coast converted to accommodation (Norway, Sweden & Finland)
- Cabin/Hytte/Rorbu (fisherman's cottage) - self catering option with kitchen/kitchenette (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland & Iceland)
What we will never do is put you in a chain hotel in a town or city. You will always stay somewhere unique, somewhere with charm.
