Hurtigruten Themed Voyages
Norway – Voyage of the Vikings
Each year, Hurtigruten offer several themed voyages with special activities & guest lecturers.
Hurtigruten’s 12-day ‘Voyage of the Vikings', which sails from Bergen to Bergen on 13 October 2019, will examine the stories of these famed seafaring explorers and the coastal areas where they once lived. Featuring a series of excursions and lectures led by Dr John Haywood, who studied medieval history at the universities of Lancaster and Cambridge, and Copenhagen. A full-time historical writer, Dr Haywood has written over 20 books, with his main interests the Vikings and maritime history. John has worked as a tour leader and ship’s lecturer since 2012, mainly in the Baltic, Norway, Svalbard, Iceland and Greenland.
With Dr Haywood, at the helm, travellers will tour Trondheim, Norway’s first capital city, which was founded by King Olav Tryggvason in 997, and have the option to participate in a traditional Viking feast inside a reconstructed longhouse with a chieftain and his family.
On-board ‘Who Were the Vikings’ and ‘Viking Religion and Society’ lectures and documentary films, including The History Channel's Vikings: Fury from the North, will give travellers a deeper understanding of this often misunderstood group.
