Get to know Hurtigruten's MS Spitsbergen
Hurtigruten's MS Spitsbergen launched in July 2016 and is travelling along the Norwegian coast.
Hurtigruten's MS Spitsbergen is named after the island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago. Hurtigruten has a long history of travelling to this destination, starting back in 1896 with the ‘Sports Route’ from Hammerfest to Spitsbergen with DS Lofoten. The captain on board was Otto Sverdrup, who had just returned from an expedition to the Arctic Ocean. That same year Richard With built a hotel near Longyearbyen on the island of Spitsbergen.
Joining the fleet in 2016, the MS Spitsbergen’s maneuverability and optimal size make her especially suitable for exploring the coast of Norway and beyond, bringing Hurtigruten guests even closer to nature. The interior of this modern and environmentally-friendly ship was designed by Tillberg of Sweden, the world's leading marine architecture and interior design firm.
MS Spitsbergen is already travelling along the Norwegian coast on special itineraries. These special inaugural voyages will have an exclusive itinerary featuring an intensive ‘best of Norway’s fjords’ route with added flexibility for hikes and wildlife viewing. Because MS Spitsbergen is not on the ‘working ships’ route like the rest of the Hurtigruten fleet, there will be no port stops during the night, providing more time to enjoy daytime ports and activities.
MS Spitsbergen is traveling along the Norwegian coastline following the same route as the other ships on the Classic Coastal Voyages.
After the 2016/2017 season travelling along the coast of Norway, MS Spitsbergen will alternate between the Norwegian coast and polar expeditions. Starting in May, 2017, guests can sail on MS Spitsbergen to Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe and Shetland Islands, as well as to Arctic Canada.
In 2017/2018, MS Spitsbergen voyages along the Norwegian coast will operate as expedition ships with expedition teams, the ideal choice for those who want to explore the coast in an active way.
